Central Agricultural University

The Central Agricultural University has been established by an act of Parliament, the Central Agricultural University Act, 1992 (No.40 of 1992). The Act came into effect on 26th January, 1993 with the issue of notification by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Govt. of India. The University became functional with the joining of first Vice-Chancellor on 13th September, 1993. north east education fair 2009

North East Education Fair 2009
The North East Education Fair 2009 is a career exhibition in Guwahati, which will be held during June 8 and 9, 2009 at the prestigious Cotton College campus, to spread the vast message that sustained growth of economy of the country is strongly linked with the quality of education. This is just around the time when the students and their parents look for the best options. This mega event will provide a unique opportunity to the aspiring students who are on the threshold of stepping into an ever-increasing globally competitive career path. This is a mega education event in which management, technical institutions and and other prominent colleges are expected to participate under one roof to showcase their strength on management courses, advertising, airhostess, architecture, company secretary, career assessment programmes, diploma courses, engineering, fashion technology, finance & banking, hotel management, interior designing, IT Hardware, IT Software, jewellery designing, multimedia, animation, skill – personality & communication development courses, photography, paramedical courses, placement training programme, scholarships, study loans, theatre, career counselling, accountancy, education allied aids and others.
The North East student market is among the biggest contributor to the student campuses of institutions in India.
According to a study by the Govt. of Assam in 2007, up to 50,000 students per year leave Assam to study in the rest of India. This number is even higher for the states like Meghalaya and Mizoram.
Absence of specialized educational institutions force students to study outside this region. Students who want to study in high-demand areas like management, medical, technology, hospitality, fashion, etc. do not have any option but to go to other cities in India.
In recent days, parents are able to spend reasonably on their children’s education more than earlier. Bank loans are also of easy reach.
Adverse Political situation, and lack of local employment opportunities force people to opt for studies in other states like Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, etc.

North-Eastern Hill University was set up by an Act of Parliament and notified on 19th July 1973. The objectives of the University, as laid down in the act, are "to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the North-eastern region, and in particular, the intellectual, academic and cultural advancement".
The jurisdiction of the University extended originally to the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland and the erstwhile Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. With the establishment of the Nagaland University on 6th September 1994, the jurisdiction of NEHU ceased over Nagaland. Likewise with the establishment of the Mizoram University the jurisdiction of NEHU over Mizoram also ceased from June, 2001. Arunachal Pradesh has its own university. However the North-Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology located in Arunachal Pradesh is affiliated to NEHU.
Initially, the academic departments and administration of the University at Shillong functioned from hired buildings. Very soon, however, NEHU acquired two prime properties in the city, one belonging to the former Maharaja of Mayurbhanj and the other to the Rani of Bijni. The academic departments then moved to these two sites. Meanwhile, the Government of Meghalaya acquired, for the University, a substantial plot of land (measuring about 1225 acres) in Umshing, a little outside the city limits, for setting up its permanent campus. This picturesque land, gently undulating and thickly wooded - a perfect location for the University - was a gift from the Government of Meghalaya. The survey of the land and the master plan for the University were completed during the VI Five Year Plan; and construction activities began in a modest way during the VII Plan period. By the year 1991, with the completion of the construction of several residential quarters for the faculty, hostels for men and women, a ring road, a modern workshop for the University Scientific Instruction Centre, a building for the Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre, and Guest House-cum-Seminar Complex, a complex of buildings for the science departments and with our own electricity and water supply system in place, the campus took the visible shape of an attractive University in the making.
In 2005, following the shifting of the departments to the Permanent Campus at Umshing, Mayurbhanj Compex at Nongthymmai was disposed off to the Government of Meghalaya. At the moment, barring a few Centres located at Bijni Compex, almost all departments of the University are housed in the buildings on the permanent campus. We now have Internet connectivity through our own VSAT to which all the departments located on the campus are linked. Efforts are on to enhance the range of our Internet connectivity. The telecommunication department has set up a fully automated telephone exchange on the campus. This is first of its kind in any University in the region. Much of the developmental work on the campus in the past couple of years or so has been made possible by the generous grant that the University has received from the Government of India from its "non-lapsable pool".

Gauhati University

Gauhati University was established by an act of the State Legislature, namely, the Gauhati University Act 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947), of the Government of Assam in the year 1948. The University is funded by the University Grants Commission and the Government of Assam. Besides, various agencies of the Cetntral and State Government provide various grants and assistance for Research and other Academic activities. The University is in its 58th year existance, and is the oldest, largest, and the most premier seat of higher education in the entire North Eastern Region of India.
The first Court meeting of the University was held on 26-1-48 at the old Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College, Guwahati. Accordingly the date '26 January' is observed as the Foundation Day of Gauhati University. Thanks to the relentless and untiring efforts of a band of dedicated workers like Gopinath Bordoloi (the first Chief Minister of Assam. He was awarded 'Bharat Ratna' posthumously), Madhab Bezbarua, Bhubaneswar Barua, Sarat Chandra Goswami, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (former President of India), and many others, and the help and co-operation of the people of Assam, the University could be eatablished in 1948.
The University which started functioning from the city centre was shifted to the present campus in 1955-56.
The University has been awarded a 4-star (****) status by the National Assessment and Accrediation Council (NAAC) of UGC
